Clinical case description:
This implant was placed at the Periodontics Department, Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, NY, USA.
At 3 months, when the patient returned for a follow up visit and evaluation to proceed with the prosthesis, it was realized that the healing abutment was not in place and radiographically around the implant was observed a bony defect.
The site was reopened and although there was a 9mm bony defect on the mesial aspect, as can seen on the pictures the implant was immobile.
It was decided to clean and decontaminate the implant surface with titanium curettes and H2O2, place Geistlich Bio-Oss® small particle in the bony defect and cover it with a Geistlich Bio-Gide® membrane (double layer technique). Attempt was done for primary closure.
At 4 months a second stage surgery was done where the successful result of the Guided Bone Regeneration surgery was confirmed radiographically and clinically and the patient was restored with the final prosthesis at the Prosthodontics Department.
Treatment of the patient and the surgical procedure were performed under the supervision of Dr. Georgios Romanos.
